Each Pokemon has a set Tera type, but for players that really want ultimate control over their party, you can actually alter a Pokemon’s Tera type with a bit of work. With that in mind, here’s how to get Tera Shards in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Tera Shards Explained

Terrastalized Pokemon can be found out in the wild, and if you defeat them, you can get a small amount of Tera crystals. However, finding wild Terrastalized Pokemon is unreliable at best, and even when you do find them, you won’t know what type of crystals you’re getting until they’re defeated.

Tera Raid Battles are the better source of Tera Shards, and they can be found all over the map. If you open up your map, you’ll see a ton of little icons that look like the type symbols, and each of these is a Tera Raid Battle with a Pokemon of that specific type, meaning you’ll get those specific crystals if you win. However, the number of Tera Crystals you get is entirely depending upon the star ranking of the battle. You can see how it shakes out below.

One-Star Battle — 0 Tera Shards. Two-Star Battle — 0 Tera Shards. Three-Star Battle — 2 Tera Shards. Four-Star Battle — 3 Tera Shards. Five-Star Battle — 4 Tera Shards. Six-Star Battle — 6 Tera Shards.

Your ability to get Tera Shards will obviously go up as you progress through the game and level up your team. Now once you’ve collected the shards, you need to know how to use them.

How to Use Tera Shards

Tera Shards are sued to change the Tera-type of a Pokemon, and once you have 50 of a specific type of shard, you can change a Pokemon to that type.

To change a Pokemon’s Tera type, head to the town of Medali and go to the Treasure Eatery, the restaurant right next to the Medali (East) Pokemon Center. Of course, to use this feature, you’ll need to have beaten the Medali gym leader, Larry.

Once you’ve done that and you have enough shards, simply head into the restaurant and talk to the chef to change the Tera-type of whichever Pokemon you want.
